Dr. John Watson has felt rather protective of his housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson, since their mutual friend Sherlock Holmes plummeted over Reichenbach Falls. So when she asks for his help tracking down a lost member of her sewing circle, he can’t bring himself to say no. At the home of Mrs. Fionnula McPherson, he and Inspector LeStrade find the burned corpse of a maid and meet Mrs. McPherson’s boarder, amateur inventor Cassius Groby, but there’s no sign of Mrs. McPherson. LeStrade is keen to mark the whole affair down to a kitchen fire, and at first Watson is inclined to agree. But Mrs. Hudson’s strange behavior after the incident and the interest of Groby’s charming fiancée, Mary Marston, make him suspect some more dangerous game is afoot.
